Diaz rose to prominence after winning the Binibining Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) beauty pageant in 1969, earning the right to represent the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant held in Miami Beach, Florida, USA, later that year. In the Miss Universe competition, she captivated the audience and judges with her grace, intelligence, and beauty, ultimately winning the title on July 19, 1969, at the age of 18.
